[tab1: This shawl is one of two designed in response to Susan’s diagnosis in 2016 with stage 3 breast cancer. Originally created to fund raise for a local cancer charity, the two patterns together raised over £2000 for the charity. In response to demand, both patterns are now once again available to purchase. FUBC #2 was designed by Tess Young, and commences with just 2 sts and is worked side to side with the edging worked integral to the main pattern avoiding the need to knit a long edging after the rest of the shawl has been completed. The shawl uses a variegated hand dyed yarn and a contrasting natural shade which are worked in stripes alongside the clever use of short rows to create a softly curving shape, perfect for wrapping closely around the neck and shoulders.
Tess used Susan Crawford Ghyll, a pure wool sportweight yarn with great structure really allowing the garter stitch body of the shawl to pop, but also with sufficient drape to enhance its drape.
The shawl was designed to maximise the use of as much of the yarn as possible, so please do note that it is very important to match gauge to prevent running out of yarn. The shawl used 94g of the hand-dyed skein and 65g of the natural skein. If you would prefer to have a little more yarn left towards the end of the shawl, you can omit one pattern repeat from Section 3. When changing colour, cross the new colour over the previous colour to prevent unwanted holes in your work.
